Tax Planning for Canadian Expats

The Canadian Association of New York is pleased to host a live webinar featuring Trowbridge international tax expert Peter Megoudis who will present important updates and advice on navigating personal and often complex tax issues for Canadian expats living in New York. Peter will cover a wide range of topics from US and Canadian perspective as well as discuss the impacts on the tax landscpae as a result of COVID-19.

Topics include:

  • Canadian and US residency for tax purposes
  • Canadian and US filing requirements
  • Tax planning for Canadian expatriates, either departing Canada or arriving in the US
  • Retirement planning
  • Ownership, sale and rental of property in Canada and the US
  • An update on how COVID-19 has impacted the Canadian and US tax landscape
  • US Estate tax risk on Canadians in the US

Peter provides a wide variety of cross-border (US and Canadian) tax services, including advising High Net Worth clients on corporate, trust, and personal structuring of their businesses, trust and estate planning, and trust and persontax filings and compliance. He advices individuals on tax planning and the compliance implications of leaving or entering Canada, or expatriating from, or leaving, the US; as well as assisting them in US or Canadian Voluntary Disclosure applications. Peter consults with both companies and executives on designing deferred compensation plans and determining compliance with US and Canadian compensation rules. 

He has over 20 years of experience as a Partner in a big four firm in their Global Employer Services Group and the cross border tax field, and has published extensively on both HNW and compensation areas, and is a frequent speaker, presenting in many forums, including BNN, STEP, the LSUC, US Professionals Association, and Federated Press. 

Peter received his B.C.L. (Civil Law) and LL.B. (Common Law) degree from McGill University and his Master of Laws degree from the University of Toronto. He is currently a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Canadian Tax Foundation.
